The Portland Canal

The 90 mile long Portland Canal is actually a fjord. A canal is usually man made (this is not) while a fjord is a narrow inlet with steep cliffs on three sides. Semantics were obviously not a priority when it was named! The original towns, both US and Canadian, were built on the pilings in the tidal flats. We drove out to the "marina" where there is a small dock with a few boats and a spot for the mail plane to come in. There used to be a ferry in and out but that stopped in the 1990s. There are cargo ships and a limber mill on the Stewart side, but not here.
