We just happened to be in town for the 2024 competition. Each participant gets a bucket of pay dirt with a certain amount of gold flakes (there are 5-8 depending on the contest). They keep the number secret to avoid cheating. The person who finds the correct number of flakes in the least amount of time is the winner. We sat next to an old timer (gold miner) who gave us some great commentary and answered all of our questions!
This is the amateur competition. For $5 anyone could enter.
This is the professional crew. There are a wide variety of techniques and some different gold pans than we have seen before.
