The Carcross Desert

It's not really a desert (too much moisture for that designation), but sand dunes that were once at the bottom of a lake. More sand is brought in with the fierce winds that sweep through. It's easy to see how the early explorers would have made the error- it's surrounded by tall jagged snow capped mountains. It seems so out of place!
