Approaching Whittier

We moved to the front of the boat as we approached Whittier. It's a unique place- nestled in the Passage Canal and built as a military port after WWII. It's a deep water, ice free port and only accessible by the 2.5 mile long single tube tunnel. (More on that later). Most of the 250 residents live in the high rise building constructed by the army. That's where most of the town is- post office, shops, school, etc. It's a strange little place but fun to visit. We were here on our trip in 2003, stayed in an apartment in the tower, and like in Valdez we never saw the view. Today was a different story!

You can just make out the town (and a cruise ship) in the distance.
